Changing the Course Menu & Design

Customizing Your Course Menu

You can now modify your course menu. Realize though that when you change the name of an item in the menu, the name also changes in your Control Panel.

To change or remove options from your course menu:

  • Click "Control Panel"
  • Click "Manage course menu"
  • Click "Modify" next to the button (option) that you would like to change OR
  • Click "Remove" next to the option you would like to remove**.

** When you remove an option, it is a permanent deletion. All information that is posted within that area will be deleted. If you are not sure that you want something permanently deleted, we recommend you choose Modify and select "unavailable" . This way you can still access it but your students cannot.

If you would like to add a new button, if it is a Content Area , click "Add Content Area" and Type in what you want the Option to be called. Then press submit. It will then add that new option (Button) to the bottom of the course menu and you can use the #'s that are on the left to change the order.

If you want to add quick links to the various tools that exist in Blackboard, you will need to click on the "Add a Tool Link"

Changing the colors of your Blackboard Site

In Blackboard 6.0, you can now have Text buttons (instead of Graphic Ones) for your Menu.

We ask that you use text buttons since graphic buttons are not ADA (American Disabilites Act) compliant. Text buttons can be read by screen readers and will be increased when someone increases the Font size in their Browser.

To change the color of your Course Menu:

  • Click "Control Panel"
  • Click "Settings"
  • Click "Course Design"
  • Click "Course Design" again (I guess they couldn't think of a better option?)
  • Selection #1- Graphic or Text? Leave this option on Text so that your site is accessible by all students.
  • Selection #2 - Select Style Properties. You can change the color of the background and the text here. Please choose colors that have high contrast (Dark background, lite text or vice versa) as students who have visual problems generally need contrast.
